Daily School Life in Australia

We have a different school uniform for Winter and Summer. This is our Winter uniform. In Summer the girls wear cotton dresses and the boys wear shorts and a shirt. Everyone wears a hat outside because the sun is very strong here. We also have a school bag which is part of our uniform.

We bring our snack and lunch to school in a lunch box. We have a 30 minute break for snack and an hour long break for lunch.

We love technology! At our school, we use laptops, Commboxes and Ipads to help us learn. We also use robots such as Bluebots.

Even though we have some high tech devices, we still use our trusty old textas, rubbers and pencils.

We read our work off the whiteboard.

We play outside on our playground.

We learn spelling words each week.

Week 3, 4 & 5 Overview

English

During Literacy sessions this term students will be participating in activities that support our Inquiry unit, ‘Why are we made the way we are?’

In Reading we will be continuing to focus on the strategies of Activating Prior Knowledge, Visualising and Summarising. Students will also be exploring the features of information texts and defining the difference between fiction and non fiction texts.

In Writing, we are developing our understanding of how to compose information texts.

Students will be referring to their new knowledge about animals (gained through animal observations) to plan, compose, edit and publish their own information reports.

Maths

In Maths, we will be continuing our unit about Place Value. Students will be learning a vast range of counting strategies that they will be able to apply when completing addition and subtraction equations.

Some ways that you can assist your child with this are:

  • Using a ruler as a number line and asking them to skip count forwards and backwards along the number line
  • Quiz them on ‘doubles facts’ eg. 2 + 2 =4, 10 + 10 =20
  • Ask students to identify the ones, tens, hundreds and thousands value in a given number. Eg. The number is: 784. How many tens are there? How many hundreds are there?

Inquiry

We are having a very exciting few weeks in Inquiry, as we prepare for and reflect on our excursion to Werribee Open Range Zoo. Students are acting as scientists as they make observations about different animals and investigate how animal’s features help them to survive. At Werribee Open Range Zoo, the students will have the opportunity to participate in a Habitat Detectives program, where they will be exploring the different habitats that creatures have and how they have adapted to suit their habitats.

Religion

We are exploring the essential question, ‘What is my role as a steward?’

As a class, we will be considering the messages in the creation stories from the Old Testament and reflecting on how we can be stewards of God’s creation.

At home, you can discuss the ways that your family acts as stewards of God’s creation, perhaps you always recycle, use green bags or limit your water waste? Consider how these actions reflect the message in Genesis 1: 26.

Week 6 & 7 Update

Week 6 and 7 Update

Can you believe that we are already more than halfway through Term 1? Where has the term gone?! The students have had a fantastic start to the year and are now settled into their classroom routines. It was a terrific experience to meet with families during the past week at our Student Learning Conferences and discover more about your beautiful children.

Reading

In Reading, students are focusing on the strategies of Predicting, Summarising and Making Connections.  Students started bringing readers home last week and we encourage you to read with your child on a nightly basis. You may wish to help your child consolidate their knowledge of the strategies we are focusing on in class by asking them to make predictions prior to reading and getting them to summarise by drawing a picture of what happened in the story. You may also wish to focus on ‘Making Connections’ by asking your child if the text reminds them of another text they’ve read or if it reminds them of a particular experience they have had.

 

Writing

During Writing sessions, the students are becoming increasingly familiar with the Writing Process of Planning, Composing, Editing, Conferencing and Publishing. Students have been exploring the genre of Narratives, focusing on including an Introduction, Complication and a Solution. You can assist your child by discussing the Introduction, Complication and Solution when watching movies and reading story books.

 

Maths

In Maths, we are concluding our study of Probability and have enjoyed learning about different graphs. We have been exploring the chance of different events occurring and collating data to present in graphs. We are beginning to explore the concept of Time duration, looking at the sequence of days of the week and months of the year. We are also investigating how calendars and timetables are used.

You can assist your child at home by asking them to help you find dates in the calendar and record upcoming events in your family.

 

Inquiry

What fun we have been having in Inquiry! We are continuing to investigate our essential question, ‘Now and Then: What has changed and stayed the same?’ and have discovered a great deal of information while having discussions with parents during our Teddy Bears Picnic. We have also studied old toys that our families were kind enough to bring in and enjoyed hearing about the life experiences of our friends and families who came to share stories about their childhoods. We are excited for students to begin researching their Personal Inquiries to discover more about these topics.

 

Religion

Our essential question, ‘How did Jesus change people and how does he change me?’ has allowed us to explore scripture stories from the Old and New Testaments, such as ‘Jonah and the Whale’, ‘Noah’s Ark’ and ‘The Prodigal Son’. Through these stories, children have gained a deeper understanding of how they can make positive choices in their lives, especially during the Lenten season.

Dear Parents and Visitors,

In term 4 in ICT specialist classes, the students have been creating their own maps using Google My Maps from the G Suite for Education (formerly Google Apps for Education or GAFE). Please browse your child’s map with him/her and ask him/her to explain the process to you. Some students have included photos and information about the Capital Cities of Australia. Unfortunately you cannot view this unless your child is signed in. You can ask your child to do this for you and browse the work together.
